concerta and allergy meds are they compatible or do they cause complications?

by kklein, Apr 19, 2008 07:08PM
My son is 8 yrs old. I started him on concerta, the lowest dose in about September/October. The teacher he had was very adiment about him needing something to keep focused. My husband and I have had issues with our son for a long time now but have it under control at home. He is very smart and a quick learner, he just seems to get bored easy. Despite my efforts to keep him off the meds, because the teacher was so insistent on him needing something, we figured it wouldnt hurt to try. He started with concerta and the teacher seemed to think it was doing wonders with him at school and focusing. We noticed a small difference but not huge. We did notice that if we missed a dose on the weekends for a day or two that he would get emotional and have problems so we try not to miss a dose. Recently the Dr. increased his dosage because it seemed that he was becoming resistant to the meds. Well, according to his teacher he was getting a little worse again. We increased his dose and there seemed to be no difference at home, but he has severe allergies in the summer and needs to take allergy pills alot. I just started him on clariton for the last few days and it seems that there may be an intereaction going on. He is having a breakdown at night around 5:30-6pm. He gets into a mood swing as if he gets depressed for a bit and then cries for an hour. Nothing works to make it better untill he is over it. Im not sure what to do. I just wanna take him off this medicine concerta but Im not sure it I should or what to do. Is there a possibility that the allergy meds could be interfearing with the concerta? I dont like giving him anything to begin with and now Im really worried about him. What should I do? Help

I know that Claritin is now OTC-- and I really wish it wasn't for this reason. Yes -- allergy medications can most definitely react with stimulants. Because your son is on a prescribed medication -- the Concerta-- it is IMPERATIVE that you check with your son's physician and then again with a pharmacist before you give him ANY other medication, including OTC medications, and especially medications for allergies.

Having said all that, it is also possible that your son is reacting to the come down of of the Concerta at the increased dose. This can be a side effect of the Concerta medication that some children experience -- even without additional medications.

You must contact the prescribing physician and report this situation right away -- that you have been giving him Claritin and that he is experiencing come down symptoms.
