Post-Op Pain/Neurological Condition

by happyopdjen, Apr 19, 2008 09:16PM
My Dad had TURP surgery, and was perfectly healthy prior to surgery, however, while in PACU, he developed a fever or 104 F.  They said that was common with the TURP procedure, and just treated the fever with Tylenol/Motrin.  My Dad from that point on had severe pain "all over", and was very restless with pain.  The doctor discharged him anyway, and he went home for one day, and was then re-admitted to the hospital.  Once again in severe "all over" body aches......he said 10 times what aches from the flu feels like!  So, he had MRI done, and that showed 2 bulging discs in his neck, so he went to see a Neurosurgeon.  That doctor said he did not want to operate on him until he was seen by a Neurologist, because he thought there may be something to do with his elbows?!?  Do you have any insight on what may be going on with my dad?  He is definitely NOT the Dad I had prior to surgery, and he wants so badly to feel better.  I thought at first it might have been Steven Johnsons Syndrone, because he takes Sulfa meds everyday for colitis, and then they had him on Septra, so the ER docs took him off the Septra, but then discounted the SJS issue.  Please help me get my Dad back to normal, any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Hi there.

Pain is really something so common and yet so hard to localize and treat even by top doctors.  The symptoms that you have discussed may not be fully explained by the bulging discs.  Some things that I can think of are a persistent infection (from the TURP) which would require urinary evaluation and administration of antibiotics.  Or an infection also involving the urinary tract that at the same time causes arthritis (may explain the problem with the elbows).

A consult with a neurologist will be very helpful since proper assessments can be done, and if it really are the bulging discs that causes the pain then a surgery might be considered.

I suggest you discuss these things with your doctor.  Hope the pain goes away soon.  Regards and God bless...
