Non-functioning macroadenoma pituitary tumor

by Lefttochance, Apr 19, 2008 11:55PM
My husband was diagnosed with a non-functioning macroadenoma pit tumor sized at 2.4 cm x 2.5 cm x 2.1 cm this past Monday.  His testosterone is 80, prolatcin is slightly high 38, cortisol was at 1.5 before stimulation, then 9.4 (30 minutes later) then 13.5 (30 minutes after that).  His TSH level is normal and the FREE T4 is abnormal at 0.64.  He has no vision loss thank god but the docs are amazed by this as the tumor is pressing on his ocular nerve.

The docs have put him on prednezone and thyroid meds for now.  He's having surgery on Tuesday.  Everything I've read is so dismal about any restoration of pituitary function.  I'm more worried about the cortisol more than anything else as the endo said if he throws up twice, he has to go the emergency, wear a medical bracelet and could die if he's in an accident and the docs don't know this.  Does anyone have any experience or info on the odds of him getting improvement in pituitary function after surgery with reduced levels pre-surgery?  Also, is there anything we can do after surgery to help his pituary health (e.g. herbs, a certain diet, exercise, etc).  My husband has been sick a handful of times in his life and this is just making us sick that we can't do anything about it.  It sounds like we are just left to chance now.  If anyone has any insight or experience, please share.  I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you.
