How to lose weight after thyroid disease

by princez131227, Apr 20, 2008 11:50PM
Three years ago I had a complete Hysterectomy 5'5" tall 120 pounds and 6 months after that I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and graves disease, After months of treatment the doctors decided I would need surgery to correct the problem. After the surgery I gained 30 pounds in 2 months, and now 2 years later I am 165 pounds, I have modified my diet and tried to exercise as much as possible but its hard because of knee surgery a year ago. I've talked to several doctors and no one has helped. I look online but I don't know who to listen too. This is so frustrating, I was always the girl that couldn't gain weight now Im the girl who cant lose it. I just want some help!!!!

Well I dont actually have any advice for you but I would like a answer to that question....I have gained 30lbs since I had my baby and have just recently found out I have Thyroid problems....I could potetially have to have it removed and I know without a thyroid I will be hypo and ultimately gain more weight....what can you do?....Id like to know because it is miserable being overweight....its not something you cant live through but it can cause discomfort, body image issues, depression, which doesnt help your health any, having the added stress...incidentally I only gained 15lbs while pregnant and lost it shortly after so, I too have gained 30lbs in a relatively short amount of time....not 2 months but I would say probably 4 or 5....hope you can find some answers and if you do let me know....I really want to be healty again but I also dont want to be a fat ***

Holy Cow! I am having my thyroid out in 2 months and have gained 20 lbs since being on medication for Grave's Disease.  So all I have to look forward to is getting fatter?  The synthroid isn't helping you lose weight?  I am 5 ft 4 in. and 180. If I gain anymore weight I will freak. I can't see my feet as it is, plus I want to get pregnant.  I have no chance now of ever looking normal again?  I can't take this anymore.  I am depressed as it is.  If you know of anything that works, beside a tummy tuck or lap band surgery let me know.

I had a tt for thyca and I am on synthroid.  If the dose is right, you technically should be able to lose weight. Of course I know everyone is different.   I recently lost 10 lbs. on Weight Watchers. It took me forever to get motivated and my mind set on it.   I also exercised.  Get the support of a friend to keep you motivated.  That helped me.  It's someone to lean on when the going gets rough.

Well, when/if I ever have to go on a thyroid hormone for hypo issues, I plan to keep my levels HIGH. The lab normals are based on MEN, not women, and therefore, our metabolisms crash. So, there you have my opinion on this topic. Hugs to all of you (male or female) dealing with metabolism issues.
