8 year old behavior prob

by cd1gold, Apr 21, 2008 03:09PM
My 8 year old son does not seem to care about anything other than playing.  He makes good grades AB honor roll but, it has been a struggle.  He is constantly in trouble at school for talking out of turn, not raising hand, laughing, etc.. He was treated for adhd, anxiety, ocd, with concerta and had severe side effects (vomiting sever headache, aggression).  He is doing better but doesn't seem to listen.  He is the last to comply to a verbal order, and seems oblivious to others directions (argues).  Is this a behavior issue or could there be something else wrong?

It sounds like the diagnostic picture with your son is not clear, and it is important to have some clarity about this. Relative to be oppositional behavior itself, it requires straightforward behavior management whether or not it is a component of an emotional disorder. There is no substitute for sound limit setting and discipline. Follow the procedures in Lynn Clark's book SOS Help for Parents and you will see progress in the behavior. Also, seek some clarity about your son's emotional status, either by returning to his providers or arranging a second opinion.
