Low pressure hydrocephalus post cavernous angioma surgery

by sfairley, Apr 23, 2008 03:27PM
My 20 yr old son had a craniotomy 11/07 and had a cav. angioma removed from his hypothalmus. He has had a total of 10 surgeries now for shunt revisions and a staph aureus infection. His doctors felt he suffered from non-compliance and removed his valve and changed his drainage to pleural. After 2 weeks of over drainage he had another distal shunt failure and he had the tubing cleared and a new strata valve placed. He continues to be very sleepy ( sleeps 20 + hours a day) and cannot stay awake to walk or say more than single words. The doctors have no new ideas and tell me that low pressure does not cause sleepiness but a women from a hydrocephalus foundation said that she had the strata valve and suffered from the same symptoms and that a Hakim valve can be set to a lower pressure and made an immediate difference to her. My son has been in the hospital 5 months and immediately prior to the latest shunt plug he had 3 days where he was awake, alert, speaking and walking. any help would be appreciated.
