coming off prozac

by speedway, Apr 24, 2008 09:53AM
i have been anorexic for 28 yrs.  I now have a new consultant who wants me to reduce my prozac from 40mg to20mg a day.  i have been on prozac nearly 14 years.  i am scared. he wants me to come off of them because he said they supress appetite.  I am now terrified coming off them will make me gain weight, and are there any withdrawal symptoms, as i feel numb, sleepy and lack enthusiasm towards life.  I am 5ft 2" and am having a bad patch my weight is 28kg i am 43 yrs old.  I this a bad weight to be.  I am trying to increase my diet slowly.  I DO NOT binge or make myself sick.  Could you reasure me as i am so afraid

I am currently on 20 mg of prozac and it seems to do fine for me. The only thing I would say is, I am a little more anxious than I am comfortable with, but I have many changes in my life going on right now. Also, my doc has not had me go pas 20 mg, so I do not have a comparison for a higher doseage. I would not worry about binging, if they bring your doseage down slowly you should be fine. Remember, if over the course of a month or so of being on the target dose, it does not seem to be working for you talk to your doc and see if you can increase again in small increments to see if you can meet in the middle somewhere.  I don't binge or purge either, but I used to so I am always nervous about those behaviors coming back to visit. They originaly started me on prozac to keep the binging behaviors at bay so I wouldn't be set back even further. I have been dealing with my eating disorders for about 17 years now. So I am a veteran just like yourself. I can def. understand the struggles. One step at a time......ps I am 5' 4 I will leave my weight out if it but I am considered "healthy"

many thanks for your reply, nice to know im not alone.  I am struggling on and although feeling abit more anxious than usual doing o.k.  My red and white blood counts along with my weight are very low at present so i am trying to increase my diet slowly, which i am sure also contributes the anxiety levels.  Thanks and take care.

not a problem, just remember the more you worry, the more of a problem it will be. Just try to relax. I know that is easier said than done though. Good luck! I hope all goes well.
