If Thyroidectomy was performed earlier would i have avoided these complicatons?

by Pdhowe, Apr 24, 2008 11:58AM
I was diagnosed with Graves (and have a rather large goiter) disease 1.5 years ago and have been treated with Mathimozole for that period of time. I asked the specialist several times over that time period if there were a more aggresive treatment such as radio iodine and was told the thyroid was too enlarged for this to be effective. I was finally scheduled for a total Thyroidectomy (surgery was three days ago). The surgeon aborted the surgery after nearly 4 hours on the operating table. He said that the thyroid was very hard (not mushy like it should be) and had 'cemented' itself to the airway, voice box and jugular vein and that removing the Thyroid was way too dangerous. He said that he had never seen this in 20 years of perfoming these surgeries. I now have an appointment for the radio iodine treatment but am not very hopeful as i was told prevoisly that this course of treatment would not work due to the size of the Thyroid. I'm wondering if the delay in getting the surgery has caused the hardening/cementing problem. Also, if the radio iodine doesn't work what else can i do? I do have an appointment with another specialist for a 2nd opinoin as i feel this whole treatment may have been botched.
Thanks!
