eating while taking ribo

by almanu, Apr 25, 2008 08:31AM
in was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the subject of eating ,before you take your ribo, i hear its a good idea to eat somthing fatty before you take it as it has to bind with fat so as to not urinate it back out, sorry for being dramatic but thats the last thing i want to do, i want to give tx every chance it can get, but as i suffer terribly from ulcers, hiatus hernia, and reflux i tend to stay away from fatty foods, just wondering would it be just as good to maybe take it with a spoonfull of extra virgin olive oil.just a tought, hope somone can help with that, if i eat any thing fatty, ive got to take an extra nexium ,i really dont want to do that as ive got my self down to a half a tab a day,as i cant take anything else succesfully,[ive tried the lot]and i know its not doing my liver anygood but them the breaks i guess.

Can you take it with a nice yogurt smoothie?  Or peanut butter? Those are both great sources of natural fats and I found the yogurt smoothie also helped to line my stomach so I never got sick off of the riba in all 72 weeks.

Also - if you could eat even an english muffin with a bunch of butter on it or a bagel with cream cheese.......something kind of simple it would work.

It doesn't have to be heavy greasy fried type foods (thank God they KILLED me during tx I could not eat any of them at all).

Or how about even a milkshake or a bowl of ice cream?  Certainly is plenty of fat in the cream right?

As NYGirl suggests, fat doesn't have to mean fried. In fact, I had far less problems with my GERD during tx with acidic foods than "non-greasy" fats such as found in whole milk yogurt, cheese, nuts, peanut butter or broiled meats. Of course, ice cream has tons of fat, if you can tolerate during tx. I couldn't. As to a teaspoon of olive oil with your riba -- in theory that works, but all I can say to quote NYGirl is "uuggh" :)

BTW treatment is probably not the best time to reduce/deprive yourself of your Nexium, if effective. Never took Nexium or any PPI prior to treatment, but took Nexium a day for most of treatment. After treatment, I was able to stop completely. So, treat yourself a little more of that purple pill if it will make your QOL on tx better. In addition, you might also try an H-2 pump like Zantac or Pepsid AC (not Pepsid Complete) at bedtime. Also, an antacid (like Tums, Mylanta) here or there is no problem as long as you space it around 3 hours away from your riba dosing.

your right mate, i was all in my head about nexium after checking out that idiot lloyd wright,im sorry if i offended anyone by calling him an idiot but i feel very strongly against him, maybe im the idiot for lisening to him reguarding nexium.saying it makes your virul load go off the scale, im proof that it doesnt after 3 mths of pure hell [and a 3 1/2 stone weight loss] it doesnt have any effect on your virul load at all, which was verified by my hepatoligist.i felt such an idiot i really did.every time i hear that guys name IDIOT comes into mind straight away, i let you guess who im refering too.lol

Your charterization of lloyd wright is correct. Again, I took two Nexium a day during treatment and am now SVR. Many others here also have taken Nexium or a similar PPI during treatment.  I'd suggest you go back on whatever dose of Nexium is medically appropriate and not listen to LLoyd Wright's take on the subject.
