cough then cant breath, then large burp type noise, then gradualy recover breathing

My son has had a cough, and seemed to be getting over it,but every day for the last five days,he has been waking up in the night unable to get his breath, very short choking type noise as he tries to inhale but cant, then lets out what sounds like a large burp,or being sick noise, but isnt sick, then things start to return to normal,i thought he was choking the first time.We had him to a and e,but they said go to the our doctors, our doctor gave him something to dry the phlegm up,but after two days of taking it,he just had his worst attack of lightly coughing, then choking,or unable to breath, then a large burp and slowly returns to normal. Its got him scared to go to sleep now,and we are returning to our docs first thing, but any help would be appreciated ,thanks

It is likely that the choking (which could be from drainage), causes your child to breathe faster and swallow air.  He then does, in fact, burp, which may make him feel better.  The best thing to do  is to determine the source of the drainage and control that first.  This may be from a sinus infection which can cause much of what you are describing.  Seeing your physician is a good start.

Thanks for your reply,But the following night he had his worst attack in the night,he couldnt get his breath that badly, that his tummy sucked into and behind his tummy muscles, and he was rock hard all over,a very scary time.We took him to the doctors, and he said whooping cough, and got antibiotics for it.We were within the ten day period,so hoped they would work for him, which it seems they have,as he woke only three times last night, with nowhere near as bad an attack as he has been having,so as you can imagine,my wife and i have relaxed a bit now.We were at A and E twice, and the docs three times before this was diagnosed, just seems a lot of suffering and worry could have been avoided if A and E had checked him out properly in the first place, after all,a minor unable to breath should warrant at least a blood check,to cancel out the possibility surely?Anyway,we are relieved that the antibiotics are having a good effect, and he seems a lot better than he was, again thankyou for replying .
