Seen any good movies lately? Open topic.

by April2, Apr 26, 2008 12:45AM
Lol, just a bit bored tonight. I thought I'd start a new topic.

So, what movies have you all seen lately and what do you all recommend and why?

I just saw "I am Legand" tonight. I know, finally! :) Anyway, it was really good! Good story line, I thought. My husband wanted to see it. I actually didn't think I'd like it as well as I did. So I was pleasantly surprised.
I'm usually pretty picky about movies. I don't like stupid movies with no real story line. So, even though this one had zombies, it still had a good story line, I thought.

What else is out there that's worth watching? Either in the theater or on DVD. Just wanted to hear some other opinions. I'll check back later! :)

Juno is a must see!!  It's one movie I could watch over and over b/c the characters are all so funny!  Ellen Page, who plays Juno, is great.  All the characters are great - her mom (who has some of the best lines), her dad, boyfriend, friend.  You have to see it April.  It's not as weird as you think it will be.

Lars and the Real Girl is different and interesting.  It's about mental illness and a guy who can't relate to people so he buys a doll and says she his girlfriend.  Talks to her, takes her to the lake, out to dinner.  Then the whole town gets on board with the idea b/c they realize it's helping him overcome his inability to relate to others.

Both of these are on dvd.

I also saw Smart People.  It was ok,  a little too predictable.  The brother (Thomas Hayden Church) and the daughter (Ellen Page) are great in it though.  It's worth seeing just for them.

I think I'll get Juno today.  I'm bored, too.  Several people have told me how good it is.

Have you guys seen "I am Legend"? I've always liked Will Smith. I think he's a terrific actor. I liked him in "The Pursuit of Happyness" too.

I guess I'll have to check out "Juno" too.

anybody else?

by suzi-q, Apr 26, 2008 02:50PM
Haven't seen ANYTHING!  I just watch beauty and the beast, little mermaid, shrek, etc...over and over and over.......love having a two year old!

I need a night out at the movies!!  Just need to lose myself a while in a good movie!!!

by April2, Apr 26, 2008 09:17PM
Suzi, we don't go to the movies much anymore, either. Too expensive! We usually wait till it comes out on DVD and just rent it. That's what we did with the movie I mentioned above.
Yeah, you need a night out! A girls night out is nice once in awhile too! I took my daughter out yesterday to the mall to look for a dress for prom (today) and she asked if she could get a manicure and pedicure. I said "sure" and went and sat down and watched her soaking her feet and getting a foot massage while I had tired sore feet from walking around all day and I said "That's it! I'm getting one too!" So I got a pedicure too. It sure felt good! Gotta do that more often! :)

Ahhhhh...pedicure sounds nice!

My sister's birthday is in a few weeks.  I will be taking her out to dinner.  That will be my girls night out!  I will be staying over at her house because she lives 1/2 hour a way...and with a few glasses of wine, I won't dare drive home...so that will be a nice break for me!

I have "I am legend" on DVD....borrowed it from my sister but haven't watched it yet.  It's good?

by April2, Apr 27, 2008 07:16PM
Yeah, but it might keep you up that night! It didn't me but my friend said it gave her nightmares and my husband said he kept seeing those pictures. I guess I didn't get scared because I knew it wasn't real. It is an action packed movie that will leave you on the edge of your seat but the story line is good. You just might want to watch it with someone though! I don't know.

Oooo, I can't wait to see Prince Caspien in the new Chronicles movie! I heard it's going to be good. Did you see the last Chronicles movie The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? It was really good too.

Any other good movies out there, kids, adults, past, present or coming up?

by peekawho, Apr 27, 2008 07:43PM
OMG!  I saw the previews for I AM LEGEND, and that was enough to give me nightmares tonight!

AndiJ78 told me once of some movie that she said was just "mildly" scary, and I called her every 20 minutes for the entire night over it.

I'm a wuss.  I freely admit it.

by April2, Apr 27, 2008 08:33PM
Yeah, but it's good enough to see! The story line is good, at least. Some movies are scary and just plain dumb. I think it's worth seeing. I love Will Smith, though. He's one of the best actors out there, I think.

I can definitely recommend
"The Bucket List" - jack nicholas and morgan freeman [can't go wrong there]
DO NOT waste your time on "The Ruins"  lamo film
"Wild Hogs' [a bit old by now] Hilarious!! especially if anyone in here is middle aged like me.
I'm getting ready to see "Forbidden City" with jackie chan and jet li
I also have my calender set to go see the new Adam Sandler movie "Don't mess with Zohan" June 6th.  i've seen previews and the trailer and omg it is sooo Adam Sandler.  The story line is about Zohan [sandler] is a Isralie assassin.  The best in the world who decides he's tired of all the killing and wants to come to the states to become a hairdresser.  He's never had any training and ends up becomming the most sought after hair dresser because of his wild antics while he's doing hair.  He's also i think the last person to look good in a mullet! LOLOL

April, you've gotta rent "August Rush" if you haven't seen it already. Excellent movie, I know you'd enjoy it if I did!

by April2, Apr 28, 2008 09:12PM
Yeah, I did see it! It was good. It's funny. Our pastor showed a scene from that movie because he was talking about our God given gifts, etc. Well, I guess Blockbuster must have wondered why they were renting out all the "August Rush" movies that week because a bunch of us went out and rented it then, lol.

I guess I need to see "Juno". I heard from more than one person that it was good. I want to see the "Prince Caspian" movie coming up too!

by ComputerGeek, Apr 29, 2008 03:33PM
"I am Legend" was awesome.  But then, I am a guy into Sci-Fi flocks big time.  (A new Star Trek is coming out next summer!!!)  "I am Legend" is NOT a movie for those that have nightmares.  But it is a VERY well done movie and Will Smith does a great acting job, as usual.

The family also just saw "August Rush" and it too was an awesome movie - appropriate even for those who are prone to nightmares.  Everything was well played by everyone in that movie too.

Finally, my son and I just watched "Cloverfield" and that movie literally kept us on the edge of our seats.  Some call it the American Godzilla (including the people that made the movie), but it is really far from that.  It is sort of like "Alien" meets "Friends."  The movie draws you into the characters lives (and makes them believable) and THEN the drama starts!

Those are my current top picks!!!

We saw No Country for Old Men and both really liked it.  Atonement was good, too.

Someone recommended Lars and The Real Girl to me, but the plot doesn't sound all that appealing to me--but I plan to check it out anyway.

I wanted to see Juno, but I heard that it glamorized teen pregnancy and that teenage girls shouldn't see it.  Did anyone who saw it think that?

Anyone see There Will Be Blood?

by AJH84, May 05, 2008 11:07AM
I saw Iron Man this weekend and LOVED it!!!

I don't think Juno glamorized teen pregnancy at all. I think the movie hit the nail on the head about how it feels to be pregnant at a young age in front of all your peers.

What I thought was unrealistic about the movie, however, was that it was so easy for Juno and her friends/family to just accept everything so easily, from the news of the pregnancy to the pregnancy issues to the adoption issues. It was like there were no regrets, second thoughts or hesitations for anything in that movie, except for Juno deciding she did not want to get an abortion once she got into the clinic.
But I did really enjoy the movie, especially the comedy of it. I'd recommend it.

I will definitly recommend "AUGUST RUSH", its a beautiful movie, I watched it with my 8 yr old daughter and we were both crying.

by April2, May 07, 2008 02:52PM
Yep, that was a good one! :)

by Agiesmom, May 08, 2008 10:18AM
AJH84, I meant "glamorize" as in "idealize in a romantic (imaginative, but unrealistic) way".  Sounds like it does, if everyone accepts it all so easily.  But I've heard it was really good, so I'll probably check it out.

Jizi, Thanks for the "August Rush" suggestion!  Plan to rent that one, too!

by maybebaby29, May 08, 2008 01:42PM
Laugh if you want...Iron Man. It was great. And RDJ was a cutie pie. It sure helped.

by Isabelle1963, Jun 14, 2008 01:33PM
going to see "The Hulk" tonight *sigh*  ya gotta love Fathers Day Weekend!

Saw "Don't Mess with the Zohan".  Word of warning, if you're uncomfortable watching a movie full of sexual innuendos with a teen sitting near you...DON'T TAKE YOUR DAUGHTER!!  Jeesh, shoulda known better than to take her to an Adam Sandler movie LOL  .  It was good though
