why cant I find whats wrong

I have been to many doctors and no one ever seems to give me any very needed answers to my questions and now I am desprate. Im 23 years old and have many problems with my periods. I can go months without a period and all of the sudden I cant stop bleeding, I bleed for months without a break, and its always this heavy old looking blood that never stops. I dont use birth control and never had to worry about getting pregnet at this point it would be a blessing for me and my husband if I did or were able to conceive, but birth control makes me bleed through the whole month that I start. Most of my doctors just give me a prescription for birth control and tell me that I have a hormone imbalance, and send me on my way. but now since Im getting older I worry if I will ever be normal if there is a normal. Please I need to know were to go to get whatever is wrong with me fixed. I dont have any health insurance and I already am spending an arm and a leg to try to pay for the doctors visits I already went to and I dont feel I can spend anymore. but I need to know if its life threatening or not and need to be able to fix it not mask it with birth control. please let me know if Im not alone.
