Stunted Fingers

by jonsmith, Apr 26, 2008 05:32AM
Hello, I am an adult male with very short fingers on both hands. The length of my fingers are as follows…Index = 65mm Middle = 70mm Ring = 65mm Little = 55mm Thumb = 55mm. Both hands are pretty much the same size.

I’m not sure on the average length of the male finger but I guess mine are about 70% of the size of most people with my height and build etc…I am 5’9” and medium build.

I have a son and a daughter and both look to have normal sized fingers for their respective ages so I’m not sure if it is a genetic thing or not. I also have a younger brother and he has what I would consider to be normal sized fingers at roughly an inch longer than mine. My father’s fingers are also normal size. The only other males in the family are cousins on my mother’s side and they have normal fingers also.

In fact, I’ve never met anyone with the same type of finger proportions compared to overall hand shape and build. It’s hard to explain really because the palms of my hands and the width of my hands and even the width of my fingers don’t look that small…it’s just the length of the fingers.

My question is…could this be a genetic thing or is it possibly the result of heavy smoking during pregnancy? My mother was a heavy smoker when I was conceived and she carried on smoking throughout the pregnancy.

I’ve always tried to hide it wherever possible because it can be a little embarrassing and uncomfortable when someone notices. I’ve never really approached my doctor about it but maybe I should although I doubt that there’s anything that can be done other than a hand transplant…and that sounds a bit drastic.

Sorry for the long post but I would like to know why they are the way they are if possible. Thanks.
