chronic pain after allergy shots

by shoshanak, Apr 26, 2008 12:58PM
My 14 year old daughter has been receiving allergy shots for 9 months, two on each arm.  Three weeks ago, one of the locations where she received the shot started hurting more than usual.  It felt as if the needle was left in.  She did not have any distinct reaction to the serum, like redness or swelling.  After three weeks the pain is still there although improved by about 50%.  After three weeks it was time for her to get the allergy shots again.  The allergy doc (who said he never heard of anything like that) recommended to continue the shots.  We decided to go ahead with  them, thinking that the one shot that hurt must have been a fluke.  A few days ago she received her shots again, three on the arm that did not hurt and one on the arm that hurt, but in a different location.  Unfortunately,  two of the new locations started hurting again in the same way, as if the needle was still in.  Now, a few days later, although somewhat improved, the pain is still there.  Three  physicians that I spoke to do not know why it hurt, when will it go away or if there is anything that can be done.
I will be very appreciative if any of you out there, from the medical community or patients share your thoughts, experience and knowledge about this phenomenon.  Thank you.

Not a medical person, just a mom like you but two thoughts came to mind.  Maybe post on the Neuro forum .. could be a nerve that is stuck in the "on"position causing the pain .. not sure of a diagnosis but I'd ask around there and ask if something like RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) could be going on due to the "trauma" of the shot.  That is when the sympathetic nerves do not turn off and cause continuous pain.

My other ? is whether there is any joint pain involved near or distant to the allergy shot?  If so it could be a local reactive type of arthritis from the actual injection ingredients and the body's response going askew against a joint and not just the shot itself.

Definitely come back and let us know!
