Child Vomits EBM after a Formula feed

by anou, Apr 27, 2008 12:59AM
My daughter is 5 months old and 7.6 kgs.She is achieving the activities she should for her age.I had candida infection after her birth and also inverted nipples. So i breast fed her with a shield for about 1.5 months only. After which i had to return to work and i switched to EBM through bottle.Due to shortage of EBM i tried giving her formula when she was 2 months old, with difficulty she took the formula---about 60ml and then after 3 hours when i gave her EBM she took it but vomitted after 10 mins. This happened twice within one week. Now she is 5 months and she showed up some fresh plus ocult blood in her stool. The doctor gave her a course of Phlegel and she was ok now again after 10 days she showed blood in her stool.Being a working mother i have to express in the office toilet. So i feeI the infection may be because of that so i will stop expressing in the office. For that gap i need to start formula for her.I tried again yesterday and she took only 5 ml formula(brand changed) that too with difficulty. Then when i gave her EBM she took 120ml but after 10 mins vomitted the whole fed.Now what shall i do? Why is she vomitting and how can i shift her to formula?pls help

I recommend to transition from breast milk to formula is to mix the two. Start with ¾ breast milk and ¼ formula, go to half and half, then ¼ breast milk and ¾ formula, and finally to all formula. You can do each mix every 3-4 days as long as she is accepting the mixture. She will get used to the formula taste gradually. Once you are on formula and she is accepting it, do not reintroduce breast milk bottles. Make sure your hands have been washed and your equipment is cleaned just before you are expressing your milk since you have to do it in a public bathroom.
I suggest you have her checked by her MD if she is still vomiting after the full transition to formula. Something medically maybe going on. Best of luck.
