Pulse Rate

by grayandwrinkled, Apr 27, 2008 01:11AM
I went to a Lifeline Screening with my Mom so she would not be nervous.  However, I received a follow-up letter stating I needed to see a physician concerning my EKG.  They sent a copy of the results and highlighted "50 BPM"  This really concerns me because I just started exercising at a gym and when I was assessed they kept asking me if I was on a beta blocker - which I am not.  I recently have lost 120 lbs (lap band) but still have another 100 pounds to lose.  So my pulse is definitely not from being in great shape.  I am 54 and female.  I have noticed a being lightheaded at times - but just attributed to age.  Should I be concerned?  My family doctor just said if symptoms start bothering me I may have to have a pacemaker.  I want to know why my pulse has bottomed out.

Hello and welcome to the community

Given the comments that have been made coupled with the fact that you sometimes feel lightheaded, I think it might be a good idea to have your doctor refer you to a cardiologist.  As to the "pacemaker" comment, does your doctor feel there is a need?  Pacemakers are not inserted just for comfort, so I'm a little confused by his comment...Have you ever worn a heart monitor?  An HR of 50 may be normal for you, but a cardio eval will give you a much better idea of whether a pacemaker or other intervention (medication) would be helpful/necessary.

Congrats on the weight loss...Here's to continued success!!!
