its sleep paralysis, i am narcoleptic and this hapeens to me 2-3 times a day. its a pain in the butt. Its your R.E.M. sleep state, goes into full dream mode, instead of allowing your body to normally relax and fall asleep. I wake after a 10 minute ordeal and feel ill and my eyelids are red and so is my chest. I am weak and it takes me a few minutes to get with it. Sometimes then i go back to sleep for a nice nap. My mother had this when she was younger but she isnt narcoleptic. It does run in the family I am sure there is someone who has had this and forgot. Maybe the way you describe it, they dont remember how they felt. Dont worry about it , it happens to more people than you know. When i start to have a sleeping attack, i just let my body go with it, sometimes i fight it, because i start to have the vivd like dreams and maybe think someone is in the room, when i know there isnt and i try to wake out of it. I have had this since i was 12 and i am 34 now so i know how to get out of it and its hard. If someone is in the room or next room , I can hear them, thats because your supposed to be in first stage of sleep mode , but your in dream mode , so its like your stuck between the two , and so you feel like your body is jerking, or you may feel like your jaw is, etc. I have asked my mother many times and i dont do it , but my eyelids move alot and that is dream mode. Sometimes i think someone might be talking and i wake up and they were talking but I will think it was one thing they were talking about and it was actually something else. They do have meds for that, I think. I dont take anything, because ive been dealing with it for so long, for narcolepsy yes i do to stay awake. I used to take medication for my cataplexy but i can keep that under control. That is when you lose your muscle tone and go limp from an emotion. With me , it was laughing, lol. my eyes will get really red, because i am controlling it. I used to just fall down in the mall , lol, and im concious, but my jaw would twitch, and i would try to talk but it would be all jibberish. I deal with it alot better than yester years. Most people wouldnt even know i am narcoleptic.
