meds for aspergers?

by isthiscp, Apr 27, 2008 08:10PM
I have only been made recently aware that ther are meds for aspergers. My brother is 16 and had aspergers. He has SERIOUS aggressions issues, has had since small. I fel that this has held him back socially as he has a way of turning everything into a row and a physical fight. Any ideas?

I don't think that there are meds for aspergers specifically.  There are medications for aggression, anxiety and other behaviors that sometimes go along with aspergers.  Some kids I know  are also on meds that target brain function (taken off label) or seizures.

I am sure that other members of this group may be more knowledgeable about this and have first or second hand experience.  Maybe they can give you a better answer.

There are several medications used to treat they symptoms of autism.  Risperdal is the only FDA approved medication used to treat Autism.  It targets the aggressive behavior as well as anxiety.  My son is 9 and has ADHD and ODD along with Asperger's.  Stimulants seem to be the big push right now and we do have my son on Adderall as well for the ADHD symptoms which has made a world of difference.  We have only been on the Risperdal for a week now and it takes some time to get the maximum effect but so far, absolutely no issues!
