bile duct cancer

by Mel0968, Apr 28, 2008 10:09AM
I am looking for anyone who knows anything about stage four bile duct cancer? My husband who is 46yrs old has this disease. We have two daughters and i am very scared for him. He is currently taking chemo. He is very sick and now shows signs of swelling in his feet legs and hips. I am not sure if this is part of his disease or chemo or both. Does anyone know of anything about this disease. He has a 10" tumor in his liver and a section in his mid-section that has a tumor and it's in his lungs> not much more than a grape size tumor in his lungs. His liver has the biggest tumor. Is there anything out there that is known to gave great results in shrinking tumors? I am desperatly looking for something to hold on to.

Hi.  For inoperable bile duct cancer, there are two other options aside from chemotherapy: external beam radiation and photodynamic therapy.  External beam radiation can be used as an alternative to stents for removing the blockage of the bile duct by the tumor.  It has been found to prolong survival in those with unresectable tumor.  Photodynamic therapy involves insertion of a catheter into the tumor and infusion of a photosensitive material, which, upon exposure to a light source, becomes activated and dissolves the tumor.  You may wish to ask your husband's oncologist if these treatment modalities are appropriate for him.
