Back Pain,Posture,And Weakness

by Rtb052, Apr 28, 2008 02:02PM
Hi, I'm 17 years on in June and I've been suffering of back pain for a while now, from around about the time I quit dance class, about 2.5 years ago.

It's not something I constantly have, I can do a few weeks without it, but when I do get it, oh my, it's painful. It tends to be in my lower back but has risen as far as half way up before.

I was told I have awful posture, my back is always curved because I find sitting upright generally uncomfortable. I cannot stand with both my legs straight, one leg is always bent, causing me to stand lop sided. My legs feel physically weak if I stand up straight, which is why I slouch. I'm also very flat footed.

The pain is bareable most of the time, allthough on one occasion I especially felt unable to move without a jolt of pain. I'm wondering what I should do?
I'm thinking of making an appointment with the doctor soon, but I felt like I wanted general information about what could be causing my problems from here first :)

Please let me know any infomation/Share any simmilar experiences

Hi There.  I too am a dancer.  The most common causes of low back pain are underdeveloped abdominal muscles (your abs safely support your spine) and tight hamstrings and glutes (which can pull your back into an over arch)  Quitting your dance classes could lead to these problems, especially if, being a dancer,  you have an hyper-flexible lower back.  I reccommend excises like pilates or yoga as they are low-impact, but focus equally on stretching and strengthening with an emphasis on core support.  Also learn where your pelvic floor is (the muscles you use when you stop yourself from going to the bathroom)  and make a habit of engaging it whenever doing physical activity, lifting or standing for a long period of time. Feel better!
