dieting post thyroidectomy

by cassie0507, Apr 28, 2008 02:20PM
I had a total thyroidectomy in 2005 and have been taking Synthroid ever since. I have been having an awful time losing weight even though i watch not only calories, but carbs as well. My endocrinologist told me I could take anything but diet pills to help me, but never elaborated any further. Is there any certain diet that works with someone in my situation? I have rejoined the gym after having a baby last September and I walk 3-4 days a week after work. What do you suggest? Any tips or info is appreciated.

Hi,
I had a TT due to pap cancer 2 years ago.  My TSH is kept really low at like .03 or around there.  I am on 175 mcg of synthroid.  I have found that dieting now for me is really not any different than before.  The low TSH works in my favor.  I'm about the same weight now as when I had my TT.  I was terrified that without a thyroid I would balloon up to be obese.  Not so.  I think if the hormones are at the right balance, diets would work the same.  My problem is I cheat the same now as I did before! LOL

My tip would be to make sure your levels are where they should be and that you haven't become hypothyroid. I don't know anyting about diet pills.  I have always stayed away from them so I can't help you there. Is your walking brisk enough?

I have done Weight Watchers and it really worked for me.

Good Luck,
Emmy

Hi
Im on 200 mcg after TT for thyca in 06.my last TSH was 0.2.I managed to lose about 25lbs after surgery and have kept the same weight for the past year.I work out alot and eat about 5 small meals a day.I drink a superfood smoothie every morning which gives me an incredible amount of energy and speeds up my metabolism.I try to stay away from certain meats, dairy, sugar, caffeine and white flour.
