Confusing Information at Dr.s office

by adgal, Apr 28, 2008 08:48PM
I was so excited to find at about 9-10 days dpo, I received a BFP on a first response HPT.  The same thing happened the next 2 days with clearblue easy EPT. All of these were first morning urine.  I went into my Dr.s office today for confirmation, now at 12-13 dpo.  As they had instructed, I brought a first morning sample with me.  It tested negative.  The took blood, and called me this afternoon with the results...70 HCG.  I double checked it was 70, not 7.  Then the tech I was on the phone with proceeded to tell me that they wouldn't confirm my pregnancy.  It was "borderline".  Now, I know its early, but I was under the impression that anything over 5 was pregnant.  70 at this stage sounds pretty good to me.  How can they call it borderline?  I am really upset over this.  What do you guys think?  Thanks for any input you may have.

the doc office telling you it is borderline kinda seems odd....70 is excellent number for 12DPO and definitely confirms pregnancy. Dont be anxious....beleive u are pregnant and test again tomorrow morning or repeat your blood work, if possible at another location maybe your gyn. Good luck and congrats

Repeat your bloodwork, but I think you'll find you are indeed pregnant.  You are correct or at least we all are that anything over 5 in bloodwork was preggers and the HPTs test for anything over 20? in the urine.

Congrats...somebody's blind and I don't think it's you!

I was 11 DPO and mine was 50.. so yes I think 70 is great.I also think some Drs are cautious especially for those who have been TTC for a long time

I think they might say that because your early on and if it doesn't double then a chemcial pregnancy might occur. How far along are you? I was five weeks and my test came back 65 ... I took another hpt and it came back fainter than the first a week earlier . A couple of days later I started to bleed and had a chemical pregnancy. I would take another hpt and see if the line is darker

I agree.  The docs say that sometime if the numbers look low so that you don't get excited when you're having a chemical.  Still 70 is definitely pregnant.  My HCG at 12dpo was 27 and I'm now almost 12 weeks.  Anything over 5 is pregnant, although the doctors typically won't say "positive" until its over 25.  Hang in there, don't stress, take it easy, and we'll all pray that your little bean sticks.  SSBD.

Thanks everyone.  I appreciate the comments.  I am not sure how far along I am as I was pregnant last month, and it ended very quickly. 2 days after a positive HPT.  I guess thats a chemical pregnancy?  But I did start using an OPK, so I know I am about 12-13 dpo.  I guess if I had had a normal cycle, that would put me at about 3 1/2 weeks.  I see my ob/gyn on the 9th of may, and I may just leave it until then, although I know I will be taking other HPT's just to reassure myself..

Thanks so much.

See mine said at day 13 mine was 40 and they said that was a solid number. It went to 121 by day 15 and today I have my final test.

I read that HCG numbers don't mean squat really. As long as they continue to double or go up, that's fine. I think it's crappy of your doc to be that way.

Good luck. Don't let them scare you.

I was still so upset about it this morning that I called my OB/GYN's office.  (It was my generalist that did my bloodwork yesterday).  I spoke to his nurse and she said 70 was great for where I was at, and there was no borderline (I still can't figure out what the heck that means) about it.  She wants me to have the bloodwork repeated tomorrow or thursday, but only to ensure its rising the way it should.  I am so angry at my generalists office, but felt much better after talking to my OB/GYN's nurse.  Now I just have to make it to the finish line!!

We all wish you the best of luck, don't stress because if you are prego then your heart rate goes up and that isn't good for the baby, do some yoga, distract yourself and retest in a bit.  I have never even made it to where you are right now so I don't know but didn't they ask to come in for a second opinion if you are boarderline?  My father always told me when i was a teenage girl you are not just a little prego, either you are or you aren't. He was afraid I would be a prego teenager or something, he never threatened with, "start trying right after you get married because it will take two years!!"  HA! Hope I made you smile!!!  ;)  Hopefullly you are!!!  Lots of baby dust!!!

Thanks, you did make me laugh, and thats such a good thing right now.  Truthfully, I am so afraid right now.  My fertility issue is in that I can get pregnant, but I have miscarried twice.  No one can seem to tell me why.  Its so heartbreaking every time.  But I know I am in good hands with the OB/GYN.  He specializes in fertility issues and high risk pregnancies, in fact thats all he does.  He has an excellent reputation.  I just don't have a lot of confidence in this generalist right now.  According to my nurse at the OB/GYN office, 70 HCG at 13 dpo is not borderline, its a solid positive.  I think part of my fear is also that my next bday is 40th, and I am feeling panicky, that time is running out for me.  Doesnt' make sense, because I personally know lots of women who gave birth well beyond their 40th.  Anywy, thanks for the post.  I appreciate it.
