Herpes/pregnancy

by mona11, Apr 29, 2008 07:25AM
I know that I have herpes but have never been diagnosed.  I have outbreaks about three or four times per year, and have had them for the past 11 years or so. I've never been in for treatment during an actual outbreak.  I have had a few blood tests taken that all come back negative.  I am 35 weeks pregnant, and have had one outbreak during pregnancy at around 25 weeks while on vacation out of the country and could not see a doctor.  My OBGYN says that I do not have herpes, based on blood tests coming back negative.  I know however that I do have herpes and am very concerned that I will not be treated with the right precautions during labor.  Is there any reason that my blood tests continue to come back negative when I do in fact have genital herpes? If so, it would seem that this would be an even greater risk to my baby, because it seems as though my body is not building up the antibodies that should be showing up on blood test results, and therefore the baby is not receiving these antibodies either.  Do you have any advise?  Thanks

There are different types of antibodies. The blood tests we use to test for herpes only look for igg antibodies.  The types of antibodies we transmit to our babies in utero are not the igg kinds.

At this point if you should get a lesion  you need to see your gyn ASAP for a lesion culture and typing.  Even though you've convinced yourself that you have herpes - that doesn't mean that you really do. Continued negative tests makes it unlikely that you do have herpes.  You easily could have an allergy or some other sort of skin condition going on.  Since it's the last month of pregnancy - your options are very limited at this point. Should you get a return of genital symptoms just follow up on them promptly. Your options are too limited for any other sort of work up.
