Should I be worried? Migraines - is it aura in both eyes, fainting

by mirisa, Apr 29, 2008 10:50AM
I live in South Africa and don't have the greatest faith in the doctors here as each one's told me something slightly i diferent. I was very sick with asthma as a child. I grew out of that but straight into migraines. They subsided when i went onto the pill at 15 as the doctor believed they were hormnal. Well they came back at the ge of 23 with a vengeance. There were also odd fainting spells from time to time where i would just feel really dizzy and cold and then black out and wake up shivering in a cold sweat, confused, and feeling like I;ve just ahd a full night's sleep.

My migraines are of the classical symptoms: visual disturbances, fuzziness, inability to focus, vision loss, sensitivity, horrible throbbing headache, nausea. One doctor said to me it's not a migraine if you see the same visual disturbance in both eyes. Is this true?
i've stopped fainting now. they found nothing through the blood tests. Do i need to go for a MRI or something? Should i be worried about brain tumours or anything like that?

Here's some of my limited knowledge so take it as it is, ie not too seriously.  From what I know, brain tumour type headaches tend to be worst on waking, and often develop over some weeks.  They are not generally chronic.  Also if you get pain relief from medication at all then it is also unlikely to be a tumour.  Unlikely but not impossible.  Yes you can request a brain MRI, they are often used to help understand migraines.  I have just had a brain MRI not for migraines (another issue, I really don't know why my neurologist ordered it, but that's a whole other story) and be warned they are not pleasant.  They are noisy, long, and clausterophobic.  CT scans are quicker but you get a hefty dose of radiation.
What is this nonsesne about if you see the same visual disturbance in both eyes it is not a migraine?  Are you sure that doctor was qualified?
Look out for the triggers of your migraine if any eg the classics of chesse, chocolate etc.  Work on your posture and strengthening your upper spine maybe, could be you are holding a lot of tension in your upper body.  And keep mistrusting doctors, best way to keep healthy.  Use them as you need them but never take their word for anything, always check it out for yourself.  Some are great, others all pomposity and nonsense.  And some your just can't tell what they're about.  And of course take any advice on any open website with a pinch of salt.  We all want to help each other generally, just accept the gesture and make up your own mind on the quality.
