Right eye is bloodshoted all the time, returning ophthalmia

by ifryd, Apr 29, 2008 01:33PM
I am writing at this forum because I have problem with my eye.

Short description of the problem:

Problem started half year ago and after many visits to doctors I cannot get rid of it.
Right eye is constantly red. I mean mainly lower lid is bloodshot.

I have to add that I have small keratin pimple on the lower lid.

I am also allergic to dust mites and flour mites.

Whole record of treatment:

1) One doctor said it is ophthalmia. He told me to take antibiotics drops and steroids drops. I was taking it for right period of time and problem disappeared for quite long period of time.
2) Second time when problem reappeared diagnose was
3) The same problem -> the same treatment

4)   Current situation is that I was diagnosed of having demodex in this small ball on the lid. This is only a suspicion. So now I am taking ERYTHROMYCIN 0,5% .

Tests so far I have taken:

1) Smear from the right and left eye:
RIGHT EYE: STAPHYLOCCOCUS SPP. Koahulazo (-)
LEFT EYE: STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS
Conclusion: We have decided with my doctor it is not a reason of this illness because left eye has more serious staphylococcus than right eye, and we have problem with right eye. Anyway taking antibiotics help for a short while.
2) DEMODEX – Test was taken from lashes. Test was negative. But my doctor has suspicion that Demodex folliculorum is in this small ball, pimple.

If you could help me with this problem I would be really grateful. As I mentioned before I am allergic to dust mites and when I get up the problem is the most severe. So my question is:  Do you think it can be based on allergic problem? Attacked is only one eye? But can it be anyway? If yes should I take once again antibiotics and steroids drops and then take care for my bad and reduce these dust mites?

Maybe you have other suspicions or maybe other propositions about tests I can do.

Anyway I ask you for help. I and my doctor are helpless to find right answer.

Thanks in advance

Adam

You can easily see demodex at the slit lamp if you have one of the more moderm models with high power.  I have seen them many times.  If your ophthalmologist has not been able to see them before, perhaps you should see another.  They are very easy to see as long as you have the right equipment.  They are difficult to treat and tea tree oil treatments and lid scrubs and ointments can help.  The tea tree oil must be applied very carefully and only by a skilled ophthalmologist.  Not a common treatment and probably 99 out 100 doctors don't do it - but if that is truly your problem - it might be worth a try.  Second - it is possible you have chronic staph lid margin disease requiring lid scrubs (try sterilid lid cleanser or ocusoft plus lid cleanser to help.)  Use proper eye drops as directed.  Your problem may be complex and no easy answers.  You need an excellent ophthalmologist.
