Stages of COPD

by brady11, Apr 29, 2008 04:49PM
I was recently diagnosed with COPD based on x-rays of my lungs.  I've had a chronic cough for 2-3 years, which is why I went to the doctor.  He said the x-rays showed a change in my lungs since a year ago, and he showed them to me and explained.  Based on my history, he believes I have emphysema--I do not have chronic bronchitis or a history of asthma.  I am a 52-year-old woman who is in excellent health now--I walk 4 miles daily and do yoga & aerobics 3-4 times a week.  However, I smoked cigarettes for approx. 30 years and marijuana for approx. 20 years.  I have not smoked marijuana for over 16 years, and I haven't smoked cigarettes for about 5 years.  Let's just say I'm not surprised.  What I want to know is what I can expect--what are the "stages" of COPD/emphysema?  I know the damage can't be reversed, and I know it's very good that I no longer smoke anything.  But, generally speaking, what can I expect?  Would really appreciate a knowledgeable and direct response.  Thanks.

You need to have a ct scan of your lungs to confirm emphysema and a pulmonary function test pft to see if your breathing is affected. There is no way to predict the progression of emphysema. If you excercise and have a healthy life style you will be healthier
