A Total thyroidectomy is pretty extreme. That's a tough call.
It would be a shame to remove a gland that may be able to serve you the rest of your life.
At the same time, it would be awful to go through multipe surgeries because someone was being cautious and wants to save the gland, only to find out in a year that you need a partial thyroidectomy to remove a couple of nodules.
I would seek a second opinion, even if it means running all the tests again. Then you'll have to decide which opinion to trust, if they conflict.
If the second opinion reinforces the findings of the current doctor, it will give you some peace of mind, and avoid thoughts of "should have" later on.
Just my opinion.
A second opinion doesn't sound like a bad idea.
