Can you get Hepatitus from Alcoholism

by tiffanyfaith1986, Apr 30, 2008 11:44AM
I have a sister in law who was in the hospital cause she was having a surgery done.  While she was in there they found a mass on her liver, They told her she was alcoholic, and now she's trying to tell my brother thats in Iraq that they told her she has hepatitus and that its caused by the alcoholism.. Can that happen or is that proof that she has been messing around on him.

is she going to stop drinking or die..thats her choice..you get alcohol hep from drinking not from messing around.....if she stops drinking she might get better...but she might not...they'll know more about the mass on the liver soon....good luck...billy

yes, we sometimes get ourselves a nice case of alcoholic hepatitis. my roommate happens to have been diagnosed very recently. he has been sober for 6 years. unfortunately, in the states the most common genotype is 1a which is also the most undesirable. even with tx--treatment--the success rate is 18%. i am assuming you are speaking of hep c. if you are not, please let me know and i will try to help you. alcoholics are given a certain grace period and i do not know what your sister-in-laws might be but i do know to continue to drink will bring about death sooner rather than later. drinking alcohol is like putting lighter fluid on the liver and accelerating it's annihilation. believe me, your brother's fears of her "messing around on him" is the very least of their problems. devon

Hepatitis C is possible obtaining with drinking, especially for one that has been consuming long periods of time.  It's not the alcohol per se, but vitamin deficiency that affects liver functioning.  The good news is the liver can recover quite rapidly, if  not already too late.  According to what I've read, only a small percentage get Hep C from drinking.  Drinking of course effects other organs including the heart as well.

Hepatitis b is a virus that attacks the liver. You don't get hepatitis B from drinking alcohol, but your liver can end up just as bad from drinking alcohol as it does from having hepatitis B or C. Both alcohol and viral hepatitis cause damaging scars on the liver, and both may eventually cause liver failure. Hope this helps.
