parvovirus B19 and pregnancy

by DPI, Apr 30, 2008 04:34PM
I have done a test for parvovirus b19 which returned positive. At the time I have been exposed to the virus I have been between 10 and 14 weeks pregnant.
Having consulted with my midwife, I have been informed that I will be screened more closely throughout the pregnancy. I read about risks of miscourage and congestive heart problems with fetus, but I would like to find out more about how can heart problems in fetus be discovered, can anything be done to prevent it or to heal it. Can baby be born healthy and then develop these problems later in life.

I'm a little confused. Your profile says you're a male.

it is a default ender which I missed to change initially. I thought I did change it later and it should be a female now.

It still says male. If you go to the top of this page you'll see the icon MYMEDHELP. Click on that and it will allow you to customize your profile! As for wondering about heart defects, ultrasounds should help detect many problems but it is not all-conclusive. Meaning that the ultrasounds can't find every little thing that could be wrong. Some heart problems correct themselves. And you'd have to find out first what a problem is and then determine if it is treatable or can be fixed.

As for miscarriage, I'm not sure about that one either.

But it is definitely possible to give birth to a perfectly healthy little baby! Keep your hope and hopefully things will turn out for the best. Please know we're here for you!

thanks for your response. i am trying to remain positive but am also keeping it in the back of my mind. the chances are low but the there is always the fear i might be the one.
i am due to o a series of scans and tests and the baby will be monitored regularly. i am just hoping that if something goes wrong i will be able to find out on time to be able to treat it.
