VCUG test for infants

by DoNoHarm, May 01, 2008 07:50AM
My 7 month old son has hydronephrosis on the left discovered recently on regular ultrasound.  VCUG is being recommended to rule out/determine if there is reflux.  Since VCUG is invasive and painful, we want to know if alternatives such as a renal ultrasound can determine sufficiently if an obstruction in the ureter or kidney exists before putting an infant through the VCUG first?  He has been set up for renal ultrasound with VCUG on the same day and at first we were told that he could be sedated for the VCUG, but when the receptionist ordered the VCUG, she was informed by the radiology department that they don't do sedation if the child is under 18 months old.  Instead of waiting until the baby is 18 months old, we would like to know if there is a facility in Michigan that will do sedation for the VCUG test in the event that we decide to go ahead with it?
