Heparin and Delivery

by katycab, May 02, 2008 07:19AM
A close family member has been on blood thinners for the last six months because she had a DVT following a cesaerean section 7 years ago.  Now that she is at term they told her they wanted to induce today, but would not discuss the risks or benefits of inducing and just gave her the appointment slip and walked out.  We have tried calling, but they will not talk to her or make an appointment.  The nurse said they want to induce because they want her to stop the Heparin for delivery, but they don't want her off the Heparin more than 1 day.  We are trying to get an appointment with a new doctor.  Meanwhile, she needs to decide if it is worse to deliver on Heparin, or worse to stop the Heparin.  At the moment she is continuing with the Heparin while we get a consult.  They never told her that they planned to induce, even though apparently they had planned it all along.  She has always been adament about her desire to have VBAC.

She needs to be off the heparin for at least 24 hrs. and they need to check her clotting factors to be sure she won't bleed out at delivery. They have short lasting and faster acting med's they can give her for the delivery if she begins clotting too much.

She needs to INSIST on talking about the risks with the doctor.
