5 1/2 week, no yolk sac

by YoungMom130, May 02, 2008 08:34AM
I went to the doctor because of an abnormal pap. He did a scoposcopy and a biopsy, but said that my uterus was soft. He noticed that my period was late, I said that I had been cramping as though I would get it, and he sent me for bloodwork to see if I was pregnant. His office called the next day (Friday) to say that I was, my second pregnancy! My husband and I were SO excited! My first pregnancy was perfect, so I didn't even consider that this one would be anything different. Over the weekend I felt alittle off, and by Sunday morning had a fever of 101, the chills, and a stomach ache. It passed, we all thought it was just a bug. As a result of the biopsy I had a brownish discharge, which he said was normal, but on Monday night I woke to go to the bathroom and it was very heavy. I had passed a clot and a tiny piece of tissue. I was alarmed, and called the doctor in the morning. He asked me to come in, and did an ultrasound vaginally. He said that I am 5 1/2 weeks along, and that by this point a yolk sac should be visable, but we didn't see one. He looked for quite awhile and said that I needed to come back Monday for another ultrasound. He said that if there was no yolk sac, then that was it, I was miscarrying. He also guessed that I had a 55 % chance of miscarrying. I was extremely upset, my family is disappointed, and I am dreading Monday. I researched my situation and saw that I had all of the symptoms of miscarrying, but my mother insists it was a flu and that my sister has it now. I am still cramping a little. Has anyone else gone through this, how did things turn out?

Well I can tell you that I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks 6 days, and ALL that was seen was a sac and nothing else. No yolk sac, no fetal pole, no embryo. But at 8 weeks the baby was there, with a perfect heartbeat.
So it can be very normal not to see a lot this early. If I were you, I would wait even longer than monday. Some ladies on here didn't see their babies until 7 weeks along.
I am a little concerned about the fact that you bled heavily though. But even that doesn't always mean miscarriage. I bled some and my baby was fine.

I'm so sorry for the stress you are feeling right now. I remember how scary it is. The two weeks I waited to find out if I was losing my baby were agony.

Thank you so much for responding, I was beginning to think that no one would. I shared what you wrote with my husband, and I guess we have a bit more to discuss.

same thing happend here and I was just behind a few days.. Im now 8.5 weeks with a strong HB.

remember that those measurements they take have to be precise. if say the top measurment went out my even a mm then it would mark you further along than not. so it is very possible it was mis measurment. the good thing is that your having a followup which will give you the most accurate results. with out measurment even if the baby shows growth then I would say you were fine!

I'm extremely nervous about going to the doctor on Monday. I am definately going to tell him that if he believes I've miscarried just because he can't see anything that I would like to wait another week or two. I would hate to wonder for the rest of my life if he'd done a d&c too early.

I'M PREGNANT! No miscarriage!!! The doc had the numbers mixed up because I must have ovulated super late. I'm 6 weeks and saw a strong heartbeat, the beginnings of a child and a yolk sac! I was more than elated and relieved to see the ultrasound screen, something I had been dreading and fearing for a week! Thanks everyone for being positive!

Thanks! I'm just hoping and praying with fingers crossed that all continues to go well. The first trimester is a nervous one. I go back in a month and the doc said he'd do another ultrasound, that'll be my third. Is that normal? I had a different doctor with my first child and our first ultrasound was to find out the sex, after that I only had 3 more, and one of those was out of concern that he wasn't growing enough. That doc didn't have an ultrasound machine in his office and the new doc does, which makes it a little easier I guess, but I've been wondering if it's normal to have so many this early??

I had around 9 ultrasounds during my pregnancy and 4 of them were early on. Don't worry, consider yourself lucky that you will get to see your baby more often :).
