possible miscarriage

I went to the doctor because of an abnormal pap. He did a scoposcopy and a biopsy, but said that my uterus was soft. He noticed that my period was late, I said that I had been cramping as though I would get it, and he sent me for bloodwork to see if I was pregnant. His office called the next day (Friday) to say that I was, my second pregnancy! My husband and I were SO excited! My first pregnancy was perfect, so I didn't even consider that this one would be anything different. Over the weekend I felt alittle off, and by Sunday morning had a fever of 101, the chills, and a stomach ache. It passed, we all thought it was just a bug. As a result of the biopsy I had a brownish discharge, which he said was normal, but on Monday night I woke to go to the bathroom and it was very heavy. I had passed a clot and a tiny piece of tissue. I was alarmed, and called the doctor in the morning. He asked me to come in, and did an ultrasound vaginally. He said that I am 5 1/2 weeks along, and that by this point a yolk sac should be visable, but we didn't see one. He looked for quite awhile and said that I needed to come back Monday for another ultrasound. He said that if there was no yolk sac, then that was it, I was miscarrying. He also guessed that I had a 55 % chance of miscarrying. I was extremely upset, my family is disappointed, and I am dreading Monday. I researched my situation and saw that I had all of the symptoms of miscarrying, but my mother insists it was a flu and that my sister has it now. I am still cramping a little and all cravings for hot sauce are gone. I know that if it doesn't work out that it's the body trying to get rid of something unhealthy, but it's still devestating. Has anyone else gone through this, how did things turn out? Any advice?

This has been such an emotional experience and so disappointing. If things don't work out, and it's not looking like they will, my husband and I plan to try again as soon a possible. How long do you have to wait after a miscarriage to try again?
