"Mucus Strand"?

by 99Lorraine, May 02, 2008 10:56AM
I received a copy of my labs which included a clean catch urinalysis.  In addition to trace amounts of WBC (suggesting UTI), there was the presence of "mucus strands".  I had no signs or symptoms of UTI, so I was very surprised to see these results.  Is the positive indication of mucus related to the potential UTI?

Enough time has passed with no word from the requesting physician that I am inclined to think it is nothing out of the ordinary.  However, this was my first appointment with PCP and I don't really have a relationship.  My inclination was to keep looking for another PCP as I learned more about his degree from Harvard, his business practices, and his health priorities than he learned about my medical history (father died of kidney cancer @ 51yo, mother died at 53).

Hi.

Mucus strands in the urine sample may suggest an underlying infection. This may not be something significant. If there are no symptoms of increase in urinary frequency, pain or burning in urination and urinary urgency ,this may not require further intervention.

Drink plenty of water and engage in regular exercises everyday. You may have a repeat urinalysis done to see if the mucus strands are still present.

Were other elements in your urinalysis within normal range?
