Genital Herpes? Not Sure...

by Melendez40, May 03, 2008 02:35AM
Dr,

This past Monday I noticed that a small group of bumps were forming on the base of my penis.  I started to worry because I had unprotected sex and received oral sex from a partner about 6 weeks ago.  I also received oral and had protected sex with another partner about 10 weeks ago.  Initially, I thought I had genital herpes, but after doing some research, I just wasn't sure.

The bumps that formed on the base of my penis did open up sores, but very tiny sores that were virtually pain free.  I tried putting a lot of pressure and squeezing the sores, but still, no pain.  This was a little strange because I know the first outbreak of herpes is supposed to be fairly painful and itchy; but I showed neither one of these symptoms.  Also, the bumps formed on the base of my Penis, not on the head or the shaft, where herpes usually forms.  Also, I don't have any of the common symptoms that often occur with genital herpes; no flu-like symptoms, no muscle aches, no canker sores.

I then contacted the girl I had unprotected sex with 6 weeks ago.  She said that she was tested last February and was fine.  She got tested again on the day I contacted her in regards to my sores.  Again, she was told by the doctor that she was clean (she also took a blood test just to be sure, but has not received the results yet).  I have not contacted the girl I had sex with 10 weeks ago, but I do plan on doing so soon.  Another reason why I may believe that this is not herpes is the fact that it showed up 6 weeks after sex.  Again, I have read that it usually shows up 3 days to 3 weeks after the encounter.

I then consulted my cousin who is in med school.  He though that it might be Folliculitis based on the fact that I have no itching or pain, and that the bumps occurred 6 weeks after my last encounter.  I told him that this was a possibility, but the bumps on my Penis did not develop around a hair follicle, rather open sores not attached to a hair follicle, or so it seems.  Also, they did not grow into a pimple like bump that I could pop, rather little bumps that had tiny sores on them.  After some discussion, he wasn't sure and told me to go see a doctor, which I haven't done yet but plan on doing very soon.

As of right now the sores have started to scab over (about 3 days after they appeared).  Please let me know what you think this may be.  Thank you.

If they are scabbed over then it's too late for a lesion culture.  That said - it sounds like these aren't due to herpes.  If you were able to pick and prod at them like that without pain it's not likely to be herpes.  following up on this with your provider is the best course of action.
