Pain in root canal area after 7 yrs

by kissyface, May 03, 2008 09:53AM
did a root canal in 2000, later in 2004 I had the crown replaced because of damage. Recently i have been having serious pain and sensitivity in the area where i had the root canal done. I cannot eat on that tooth even brushing hurt. When i first noticed the pain i went to my dentist and he said there is nothing serious but more likely a case of flossing a bit too hard when i told him i bled. This happen Wednesday night, I went into the dentist Thursday, today is Saturday and I am still in pain, the tooth is sensitive i cant eat on that side of my mouth. Even the action of my electronic toothbrush makes it hurt. When i went to the dentist i wasnot given any pain killer so when the pain gets too much i use advil. After setting the case my question now is what is the likely senario of what is causing the recurring pain and sensitivity? would requesting my dentist to take the crown off and inspect the tooth helps?

thank you

10-15% of root canal teeth will have a problem at some point in time.  There may be an infection in the bone around the tooth, the tooth may be fractured or perhaps a problem with the crown.

Your doctor should take an active roll in trying to determine the cause of your pain.  Usually radiographs and a good clinical examine can find the problem.  If your dentist is unable to find the cause then you should see a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon or Endodontist as soon as possible.
