Urinary Retention, post partum

by shom, May 03, 2008 01:29PM
I was carrying my second child very low during the latter half of my pregnancy, and was never checked for any retention or renal problems, but I did feel lower abdomen pressure thinking it was just pregnancy pains.  I now think that the pressure and pains I was having was bladder related. I delivered vaginally one month ago, and was not diagnosed with urinary retention until 2 weeks post partum.  I originally thought I had stress incontinence, but realized that it was overflow incontinence.  I've had a foley catheter in for 12 days, and am now intermittently self catheterizing for the last few days.  I am still unable to void but have the sensation of feeling like I can.  I feel like there is some obstruction that is not letting me urinate, though I was able to urinate less than an ounce two times over the last 4 days.  Do most women eventually recover from this type of problem as it doesn't seem that common?   Are there tests that can be done to find a structural cause for this? Are there tests to determine if there is nerve damage?
