5 yr old female, microscopic hematuria, fevers

by bbartoszek, May 03, 2008 05:25PM
My daughter is almost 5 years old. When she was about 3.5 the microscopic hematuria was discovered and was present for more than 3 weeks. At the time of this test, she had been in to the doctor for a fever. The doctor did not know why she had this fever. She had been on 3 rounds of anitbiotics and at a follow up visit she gave a blood sample because the fever was still present. We were referred to a urologist at a childrens hospital and made an appointment a few weeks out. She still had the hematuria at this appt, the results of the ultrasound (ABS? kidneys and such) were normal. The blood test was normal. I do not know what exactly they tested for. So basically we do not know what caused this fever. This brings us to the present day, May 3, 2008, at 4.75 years old. She was in to see the doctor on April 29th. She had a fever (and rosy cheeks) since April 24th with a cough. Doctor thought she had a virus, and was reluctant to give her an antibiotic but because her fever had been present for over 5 days but he prescribed her Cefrozil. (side note, cefrozil makes the skin on the top of her hands VERY dry, red, and irritated. It gets inflamed when wet or with lotion and otherwise appears dry and reddish. hydrocortizone helps, but it wont go away until after the antibiotic is complete). As of that appointment on April 29th my daughter had been prescribed antibiotics 4 times in the last 6 months. Today is May 3rd, she still has a slight fever. It was 100.8 at the time of her appointment on Apr 29th, and is100.2 now, which makes it 10+ days with this fever. Another thing which is strange, is that it doesnt always seem to be present. Obviously if I give her Tylenol or Motrin it takes the fever down. Except I haven't been giving this to her over the last few days and a time or two I thought that it was finally gone, only to have it raise again.

When we had that appointment with the urologist 1.5 years ago, by the time her appt came around she no longer had a fever. I think it would have helped to have the ultrasound when she had her symptoms. I am going to make another appointment for her on Monday with her regular doctor. I want to see if the microscopic hematuria is still present because I really think that these fevers and her 'idiopatic hematuria' are linked. She has had unexplainable fevers before and I just want to know what is going on. At this point, the only thing I can do is go for a follow up visit and possibly do the same tests that were done 1.5 years ago. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Or just make the follow up visit as early as possible? Thank you so much.
