Hi there,

My baby is 6 weeks old tomorrow.  She has a healthy appetite and at our last doctor's visit at one month,  she checked out fine.  Recently however (last two weeks),  she's been having a hard time eating.  She takes the bottle and after a few swallows,  pulls back from the bottle,  arches her back,  turns red in the face and yells a little bit,  then goes right back to the bottle.  This happens once or twice every feeding.  She seems to suck a lot faster than she can swallow - I switched to a low flow nipple and it helps slightly.  After a while on the bottle,  she keeps sucking and formula practically pours out of her mouth.  I regularaly use two bibs and a burp cloth at every feeding.  After each feeding,  her breathing is very very loud and rattly,  kinda like an asthmatic.  I thought her nose was stuffy,  so on occasion I have used the little suction thingy to clear out her nose,  but now I realize it's not her nose at all.  It sounds like she has to clear her throat or something.

Could it be that she's aspirating  some formula and that's why she pulls off the bottle and cries a little bit?  And would that also explain the rattly chest?  If so,  what do I do about it?  I've been reading some scary things about babies aspirating formula - I'm really worried now.

Thank you for your help!

MsA

If you suspect she is aspirating formula, she will need to be tested. I suggest you have her checked by her MD to see what is really happening.
