Thyroid Cancer vs Breast Cancer possibility

by Pat12542, May 04, 2008 09:18PM
I've had my Thyroid removed due to Cancer.  I also have Dense Breast with lumps (frequently).  Before the Thyroid Cancer, I was scheduled for a Biospsy with "Same Day Surgery", but, was instructed to go by Radiology for a "Wire" to be inserted to lead the Surgeon to the right spot for the Biopsy.  The "Wire" bent, I was sent HOME, and never rescheduled for the Biopsy.  I still have bouts with lumps, some fluid filled cysts have been aspirated, but, I've never been Biopsied.  I'm receiving an Ultrasound tomorrow (5/9/08) on my breast again, due to lumps, and wanted to know if I have reason for concern regarding  Breast Cancer with my having had the Thyroid Cancer.  Are my chances higher?  The same?  I'm VERY confused as to why the Biopsy was cancelled on the spur of the moment after the above instance.  When I've asked about the above situation, I'm assured "all is well", if that were true, WHY would I have been scheduled for the Biopsy in the first place.  Would you be concerned? Should I be?  Thanks, Pat C.

Dear Pat12542:  Having had one malignancy may slightly increase your risk of developing a second malignancy but this may not be a significant risk.  As to why you were scheduled for a biopsy that was then determined not to be necessary, we cannot speculate.  You should discuss this with your doctor, specifically, the one who ordered the biopsy. Many women have dense lumpy breasts and as long as there is nothing abnormal on mammogram, ultrasound or clinical examination, there is no reason to biopsy.
