Panic and can't sleep when I can't lotion my feet!

by frostysmama, May 04, 2008 11:08PM
Since I was a teenager I have had this problem.  When I lay down to go to sleep my feet feel extremely dry but don't show any physical signs of dryness.  I can't relax untill i put on lotion.  Sometimes three or four times.  Its so bad that if I dont' have lotion I go into severe panic and sometimes cry and will do anything to get lotion for my feet.  This has gotten worse I have gotten older.  I wake up with the dry (like I walked through hot clay) sensation several times a night now. When I am under alot of stress the problem gets worse. I have some stress related problems and was physically abused as a child and young adult. I wonder if anyone has any idea of what this is?  Has anyone ever heard of it?  Is it just some strange quirk that I have or is there something wrong with me?

I don't know if you are aware that there is another forum here called 'abuse support'.  There may be people there who you can identify and talk with.  Regarding your feet of course dry feet can be uncomfortable and painful, and there may be some reason your feet dry so quickly - maybe see a dermatologist?  But I wonder if there is something else going on here, as you seem to link it to stress and your past bad experiences.  Maybe something about dry feet reminds you of a traumatic event eg because you had dry feet at that time?  Of course I don't know but this is very serious for you, seemingly more in a symbolic way.  You perhaps need to seek out some psychotherapy to understand yourself better and have a good future.  Also maybe look on the mental health forum.  I'm not suggesting you have mental health problems, but the expert on that forum does offer very good advice.
