chronic pain hands/wrists

by eyemadreamer, May 05, 2008 01:25AM
This is all for a friend, who is in her young 20's, i'm just trying to help her find solutions and whats wrong with her hands/wrists.

In 2005, she worked for Auntie Annie's making pretzels for about 3 months and was named the fastest pretzel maker. Well, this indicates consistent hand movements over, over and over. This is when her pains in her hands/wrists started.

Symptoms: She has pain in her hands, fingers, and wrist mostly. Sometimes in her arms depending on how she is positioned. Sharp pains as well. Numbness in only her ring and pinkie fingers, NOT her middle, index or thumb. No numbness in arms either. Weakness in her hands in holding objects, cannot grip well, drops things often. Pain increases with use/movements. But is always hurting even if not moving at all. Pain is worse on her right hand and not so bad on her left. Another symptom she has is difficulty sleeping, she says she has not slept good in years.

I thought it was Carpal Tunnel at first. The symptoms are very similiar, except for which fingers numbness is in. Usually for Carpal Tunnel it is middle, index and thumb, but she has it only in her ring and pinkie fingers. So that is a throwoff for me. But could it be tendonitis? She isnt sure if she got tested for that. I have a cousin who has carpal tunnel AND tendonitis, all of her symptoms are the same as this girl, except for numbness in fingers- the cousin has numbness in ALL fingers, the whole hand.

Now, she mentioned to me thats she also has a neck pain which happened long BEFORE the hand/wrist chronic pain started. I dont know if it could still be related though. She says neck massages relieves neck pains.

She has seen a doctor many times, she has had an MRI, Cat Scan, Bloodwork, Urinework, xray, electricity shock test, and ultrasound. And, in the end of all that, the doctors cant give an explaination or a diagnosis. It is left as "Unknown".

Any help would be so much apprecaited. I really want to see her get this resolved, even if theres no cure, she just wants to know what it is and such. Thank you in advance

I have similar problems unfortunately when you constantly work with your hands doing the same thing over and over again you will get pains.  your hands are made of lots of nerves and muscles that were not made for repitious work.  carpel tunel is not just one set of sypmtoms this maybe a slow start for her or it could be a good thing.  Thing.  I work in a factory and I have to wear a stabilizer brace for my whole hand and wrist.  This minimizes movement so her joints can heal.  Early problem solving is the key she should stretch her fingers as much as possible and do frequent finger exercises this will give her strenth back in her hands.  She should try not to do any repitious work for awhile.  compression is most important the brace really helps she can get them in any store.  Goodluck
