Facial Pain

by JuleC2, May 05, 2008 06:32AM
I have reoccuring facial pain on the left side of my face that runs along the top of the left jaw and radiates into my left nostril and eye.  This pain started in May 2007.  A visit to the dentist showed a normal x-ray. The pain persisted on and off with no pattern.  In Sept. 2007 I saw the dentist for my usual check up and again, x-rays were normal.  In Oct 2007 the pain became constant and got worse. No medication could releive the pain or the pressure.  By the 5th day, I woke up with a swollen face on the left side.  Another trip to the dentist revealed that I had an infection in the tooth that began to follow the nerve into my face. I had multiple root canals to drain the tooth and was put on antibiotics. After that, the symptoms went away.  Recently, I have started to get the same pain in the same spot on the left side.  I can't chew on the left side as pain shoots up into the left side of my face.  There is no redness or inflammation in the area and it is not sensitive to touch.  I notice throught the day that my upper left jaw will start to throb.  Any idea what can be causing this to happen again?

There may be several sources of your pain.  Infection in the jaw along the nerve would be the most likely.  Other possibilities are trigeminal neuralgia, atypical facial pain, and/or a TMJ Disorder.

At this point you should seek an opinion from a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who deals with this more commonly than a general dentist.
