Who do I see for treatment?

by burtsbees, May 06, 2008 07:10AM
I have 3 warts on the side of my penis and they've been there for about 9 months. They're somewhat small. 2 are on the side of my penis and 1 on the top of my testicle. I'm positive they're genital warts.

I'm just not sure what type of doctor to see and what methods will they use to remove them?

I spoke with someone who had them removed using condylox gel and he said it took 3 days on, 2 days off, and then 3 days on again but he said it was amazingly painful. He didn't tell me what type of doctor he went to though.

So, what type of Dr would I seek treatment with and what type of removal would you recommend?

You can see just about any practitioner to deal with this, if they don't feel they can handle it, they'll refer you to a doctor who can.  If money is an issue, places like Planned Parenthood and free STD clinics are a great resource and are full of clinicians/doctors who've dealt with this infection many times over.  Some people prefer to see dermatologists, some prefer to see proctologists (if the warts are located anally), many women prefer to see gynecologists, and some just stick with their primary family doctor.

Doctors differ in their recommendation of treatment.  It depends on what the doctor prefers and what they believe will work best in each patient.  There is no "better" or best method compared to others, they work differently in different people.  Many options are available though, from cryotherapy (freezing), electrocautery (burning), TCA (acid), surgical methods (cutting, laser, etc.), and at home creams such as condylox and aldara.  Only your doctor will be able to recommend what method is right for you.

I'd see a doctor and find out what these bumps really are once and for all, since it sounds like you've let them go awhile and they haven't been officially diagnosed.  Perhaps this is HPV, perhaps it isn't.  Only a doctor can tell you, which is more reason to get to one promptly :).
