Tested pos for HSV-1, taking Valtrex, symptoms won't go away

by Scarlet47, May 06, 2008 02:57PM
I've been visiting the gyncologist non-stop for the symptoms of tingling and burning in my vagina. I was treated for bacterial and yeast infections but this time the gyncologist noticed the redness on my vagina area. She ordered tests for HSV-1 and 2 and the test came out that I was positive for HSV-1. She prescribed me Valtrex 500mg. Ironically, I started to have tingling sensation around my lips. I have been taking 500mg Valtrex daily for 1 month now and the symptoms of burning and tingling on my lips and my genitals won't go away. I've doubled up my dosage and the symtpoms are still there. So I have 2 questions.

1. Is it possible to have HSV infections in both mouth and gentials at the same time?

2. Should I stop the Valtrex and let the infection take over and heal on its own?

So she diagnosed you with hsv1 based on a blood test only?  Do I have that correct?

You can't diagnose genital hsv1 just on a blood test. Chances are really good that what's going on has absolutely nothing to do with herpes.  You should continue follow up and further testing to get to the bottom of things.
