Heterozygous for Factor V Leiden

by tinjen, May 06, 2008 04:00PM
Dr. Kim,

Let me start by giving you a little of my pregnancy history.  I have had two consecutive miscarriages and then was diagnosed as having Factor V Leiden -heterozygous.  I then became pregnant and took two doses of heparin injections and a low dose aspirin each day throughout my entire pregnancy.  The injections got very tiresome after a while.  However, my pregnancy was successful.  We have a sweet, beautiful little girl.  I found out today that I am pregnant again, and I would like to know what your thoughts are about using Vitamin E rather than heparin to prevent blood clotting. OR if it would be safe to take the low dose aspirin on its own.  I am looking for an approach that would allow a successful pregnancy and would be less invasive.  Although, I would take the heparin again if I had to.

I am asking about this because I have a cousin who has APA, and know of others who have had to prevent clotting during pregnancy, and they have only been required to take a low dose aspirin during pregnancy.  Their pregnancies have been successful.  I am wondering if my doctors took on a very aggressive approach with me.  Any information you can give me about the Vitamin E route (not sure what studies there are about it) and low dose aspirin would be very helpful and much appreciated.

Thank You,

Jenny Fernandez

Yes, many doctor would just place you on low dose aspirin and Vitamin E  for heterozygous Factor V Leiden instead of heparin and low dose aspirin. I would have to have to defer to your doctor as to what is best for you.
There is a study on Vit E--www.circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/CIRCULATIONAHA.107.716407v1
