I have a pre existing condition and can't get health care...

by snownow, May 07, 2008 01:24PM
I had acl replacement surgery in January 2008 and am no longer under a doctors care. I recently quit my job where I had full benefits under a group policy to go to go to work as a contractor. I am finding that no one will insure me under a private policy for a year. I'm young, healthy and no longer under a doctors care for my knee. What options do I have? I've heard realtors (which I am) can get coverage through their board? Or I can fight the denials? What if I don't have insurance and something "big" happens? I have NEVER not had insurance before and I feel naked!
Any suggestions anyone??
thanks so much!

Dear snownow,

You can certainly inquire within your board & at least find out the cost of membership & health insurance through that membership.
As for the private market, as you are likely to get declined for Standard Individual health insurance for one year following your surgery, you may be able to get approved for short term, temporary coverage. Short term coverage is designed to cover you in case of an unforeseen catastrophic illness or injury (something "big") up to 6 months at a time (You can usually reapply for another 6 months up to 1 year after that).
One thing you need to know is that this type of coverage would typically consider your ACL repair, pre-existing & won’t cover anything related to it (that’s why they don’t consider it a problem). You can learn more about these products by talking to a licensed agent locally or visit www.eHealthInsurance.com (where I work), and look for these types of plans. Feel free to call eHealth & ask to speak with a licensed rep if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the advice. I actually was on the phone with someone at ehealth insurance and she was didn't say anything about limited-time coverage. She just told me I was uninsurable...have a nice day.
Thanks again!
