Did my baby really die or is the ultrasound wrong?

by candykay06, May 07, 2008 04:26PM
I went to the ER on 4/21/08 with lots of bleeding but no cramps. An ultrasound was performed and the doctor said me and the baby was fine. On 5/3/08, I went back to the ER with a little bleeding but no cramps. The doctor did a pelvic exam and he said my cervix was closed and it wasn't a miscarriage. Then after the ultrasound, he told me there was no heartbeat and I was gonna lose the baby. I couldn't believe it. He was fine not too long ago. So I got another ultrasound on 5/6/08 and got the same result. No heartbeat. I dont believe it though. He's grown since the ultrasound on the 21st. He's very developed for 10 weeks I think. 13 cm. That's about 5 inches. He should only be 1 1/2 at 10 weeks. I dont understand why nobody caught how fast he was growing. Is that why his heart isn't beating? Could the ultrasound be wrong? Or do I have false hope?

Hun, I'm so sorry for the news you have gotten.  I'm not sure if because he is growing the ultrasound is wrong but I know from experience what your going through.  I was 10 weeks along, no cramps one morning but was bleeding - went to ER - they checked my cervix and said it was closed as well.  Did an ultrasound and said that there wasn't a heartbeat, but in my case my baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks so I'm not sure what is going on with you.  I would schedule another ultrasound or talk to your OB and bring up the fact that he has grown - maybe they missed the heartbeat for some reason.  I know when I had made my appt with my OB the next day after being to the ER, my OB wanted to do another ultrasound just to make sure that in fact the baby had no heartbeat because he was hopeful they missed it.  But sadly it wasn't to be - about a week later I m/c naturally at home by choice.

I hope you find your answer and please keep us updated.  By the way has the bleeding stopped at all?

I don't mean to be the voice of gloom and doom but if multiple u/s are not showing a heartbeat there is very little hope.  Something ELSE that stands out to me as being a problem not a good sign is that the embryo would be 5" at 10 weeks.  If it makes you feel better go to a different doctor for a second opinion.  This is something you need to come to terms with however.  If your pregnancy really has aborted and your body is not expelling it on its own you really should have it removed as soon as possible.  The longer it stays in there, the higher you are at risk for serious infection that could cause you to become sterile.  I understand this is a very hard thing to face.  I've had two miscarriages....one at 5 wks and one at 9 wks. I've also had a full term still born so I understand.  Unfortunately from what you've described it doesn't sound like there's much of a chance of a different outcome.

The bleeding stopped after I left the ER that Saturday. I'm trying to interpret my ultrasound. What do all those abbreviations mean?

by carissarae, May 07, 2008 10:15PM
ugh..i dont like to bring no hope either, but hunny if you have had 2 ultrasounds and are 10 weeks along and no heartbeat, thats not a good sign. has the dr taken your hcg levels to see  if they are decreasing?

by LosingMyMindInGA, May 08, 2008 09:57AM
We'd have to know specifically what abbreviations are on the u/s form in order to help you out.

by jenca78, May 08, 2008 01:22PM
They should do blood tests to monitor your hcg levels - that is the clear-cut way for them to be able to give you a more concrete answer about what is happening.  I just went through this, and I totally understand how hard this can be. :(

I got blood work done today. I'm waiting on the results. They should be in tomorrow. What happens if my hcg levels are normal and arent decreasing? I read so many stories saying the doctor told them there wasn't a heartbeat but after like 3 ultrasounds, there was one. I prayed to get pregnant. So I feel like if God didn't want me to have a baby, he would not have allowed me to get pregnant. I didnt feel pregnant for like 2 days but now I feel pregnant again. It's so hard to sleep at night. Oh about the symbols on the ultrasound...

I appreciate everybody's help!

Hi sweetie, I know this is a difficult time for you. But boy can I relate. Last April I went in for my ultrasound and they told me my baby did not have a heartbeat. Before they ruled anything out they did check my Hcg levels, to see if they were doubling that way they'd have a better indication. Well in my case I did not get the news i wanted and I did not want to wait for a natural miscarriage so I had a d&c. A few months later august to be exact I found out I was pregnant again and just had a baby boy on April 17th. You will be in my thoughts and prayers and I pray for the very best outcom for you! Hang in there sweetheart! and good luck.

ihave a question you guys.....if the think the baby passed, why havent they sceduled a d/c???? cos it's obvious she hasnt passed the "fetus"sry to remove emotion", then why havent they done a d/c? i dont understand...esp if you were in the ER nearly 2 weeks ago? so that means now you'd be 12w or close to it, and nothing has "passed", isn't that bad? could it not lead to an infection if they fetus stays after passing away?

Infection only occurs if you are dialated.
My baby stopped growing at 8wks 1day found out at 13 weeks and it was another week before I even saw a ob/gyn and got pills to induce the miscarriage (ended up getting D&C) So as long as she isn't dialted, and hasn't started to pass tissue there isn't a chance of infection.

by candykay06, May 09, 2008 03:46PM
Oh I didnt know infection occured only if you're dilated. The ER doctor told me I wasn't dilated. I keep reading how people's baby's stopped developing at # weeks. But I can't really go off of that. My baby is 5 in which is the size of a baby at 17 weeks! I'm not sure if they made a mistake or what. I'm only 10 weeks. He should be only be 1 1/2 in. Nobody ever mentioned the abnormal size. Also my hCG levels are 76,000. Is that low or high? It's so confusing!!!

by feather2e, May 09, 2008 04:14PM
are you sure it wasnt 1.3cm instead of 13cm that would make more sense . Do you know what any of your previous beta levels were? 76000 is in the range, though it is important to know if your levels have dropped.

by candykay06, May 09, 2008 04:31PM
It's clear as day on the ultrasound. 13 cm. The tech even said 13 cm. I don't know any of my previous beta levels. I have the worst doctor in the world. It's just ridiculous.
