What is wrong with my bladder and urethra?? Allergies??

by aminata, May 07, 2008 04:37PM
I am 32 years old and I have had since the age of 16  five cystitis episodes that were ate successfully treated with antibiotics. I do not smoke or drink coffee, tea, or alcohol.
Back in mid-April of 2006, as I was mowing my lawn that was full of weeds, I felt a burning sensation in my urethra. I had started urinating frequently after a few hours. it was bad at certain days and it was normal on other days. I did not experience the regular burning, pain in bladder and fever. Anyway, I ended up seeing my GP after a week and the urine culture came back + . I had e-coli and was treated successfully with Bratim.
This year, around mid-April, I was once again mowing and once again, I felt a burning sensation in my urethra. After a few hours, I started urinating frequently. Same thing, there was not pain or burning but the I felt as if my bladder was not empty 100%. I went to the doctor after 24h and the culture came back negative however, there was a trace of blood that was within normal range as well as the presence of WBC ( 6-9), and epithelial cells ( non renal) > 10.
My doctor told me to recontact him if my symptoms got worse. They did, I started feeling a burning sensation after urinating ( but it was not consistent). He put me on macrobid and it did not work. He switched me to levaquin 500 for 10 days. That worked after 48h. I felt 100% normal after 3 days. When I reached day #8 of my treatment, I mowed again and, guess what, same thing happened ( burning and the frequency). This time, I believe that there is no coincidence. I went to the ER because my doc. was away. The doc. at the ER told me that 10 days of levaquin 500 was way too much. I told him about the mowing and he said that it was very odd but something in the environment is getting to me. He did a urine culture ( not urinalysis) and there was no trace of nitrites, blood, or WBC. He told me to wait one week and go back to a GP for a urinalysis. I am going tomorrow but in the mean time, I had 2 normal days ( not burning. no frequency) and then 2 bad days and then 1 normal day. Today it was a bad day. FYI I do not wake up at night to urinate. This was the case when I had the UTI of 2006 too.
What on earth can this be?? When I mowed, I had loose sweat pants on. Anyway, no more mowing for me until I discover what I have. Many people around me are suffering from allergies ( eyes, nose, throat problems). I know that UTIs are caused by bacteria but I was wondering if there might be an irritation that makes that area weak and thus favorable for a bacteria to thrive.
Any insight would be very helpful.
P.S. My bladder does not hurt at all and I do not feel tired or weak. I am just worried to death.
