Back Spot

by Sunnyday1, May 07, 2008 06:06PM
I had a spot come up on my lower back a few years ago, that recurred infrequently-maybe 3 times.  Always in the same spot, small blisters.  It hasn't occurred in at least 8 years.  I recently tested positive for hsv-2 and my ob suspects the spot on my back is actually herpes.  I've never had any cold sores, fever blisters, etc. on my mouth or genitally.  I'm in the process of beginning a new sexual relationship and this, naturally, has caused some concern.  Can you give me any advice?  Thanks so much.

Hi,

With a history of HSV 2 , this rash may have herpes as its primary differential.  Herpes simplex type 2 may also affect other parts of the body aside from the genitals. In your case, do you have similar looking rash in other parts of your body?

With regards to the rash , how would you describe it? Does it present with blisters or vesicles that contain a clear or yellowish fluid. Is it itchy? Does it increase in size?

One thing to consider here also is shingles or herpes zoster. This may be true if you had chicken pox or varicella before.

You may ask your physician about topical or oral antivirals if indicated. In the past ,the skin condition seems to resolve spontaneously. Avoid any direct skin to skin contact with the area. As transmission is primarily through direct skin contact.

Thanks so much for the info.  I've never had this rash anywhere else-it did have blisters and was itchy.  It hasn't happened in at least 8 years.  If it was/is shingles or herpes zoster, would it still show up as hsv2 in the results I received?
